About us

Our Hepatology Research group advances liver disease diagnostics and treatment using molecular biology, bioinformatics, mouse models, and AI. We focus on liver fibrosis, cancer, autoimmune liver disease and enhancing care through telemedicine and digital health innovations.

Research Focus

We model liver diseases, including fatty liver, autoimmune disorders, fibrosis, and tumors, combining molecular biology and computational tools to predict disease progression and treatment outcomes.

Key Projects

  • Mouse Models: Studying genes like PDGF-B and TGFβ1 in fibrosis and cancer.
  • Microbiome Research: Exploring gut bacteria’s impact on liver disease.
  • Autoimmune Liver Disease: Enhancing treatment through molecular and epidemiological characterization and digital (LLM) support.
  • Digital Health: Developing early detection and telemedicine solutions.

Clinical and Global Impact

We support NAFLD research and healthcare system improvements via the KKE Healthy Metabolism and LeMeDaRT Consortia. Internationally, we partner with Universidad de Antioquia, Universidad Nacional de Asunción, and The University of Buenos Aires to extend digital liver care to underserved areas.

Funding

Backed by organizations like German Reseach Foundation (DFG), Else Kröner-Fresenius Foundation, State of Baden-Württemberg, National Science Foundation China, and Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

Lines of Work

Molecular Hepatology

End Stage Liver Disease, Liver Cancer, Autoimmunity

We study cell lines and animal models to explore the genetic factors in liver fibrosis and cancer. By analyzing genomics, transcriptomics, and microbiomics, we create hypotheses to deepen our understanding of liver disease mechanisms. This comprehensive approach enhances our models for studying and potentially treating these conditions.

Innovating Digital Healthcare

Advancing Diagnosis and Treatment for Autoimmune Liver Disease

We study liver diseases like fatty liver, autoimmune conditions, fibrosis, and liver cancer using molecular and bioinformatic models. By integrating AI, imaging, and clinical data, we improve diagnosis and treatment response, with a focus on creating accessible diagnostic tools for diverse populations, including Hispanic communities.

Global Hepatology

Digital Liver Care for Regions with Limited Access to Specialized Hepatology

In collaboration with the GIZ, our group is advancing hepatology care through telemedicine and digital technologies in regions with limited access, such as the Amazon, rural Colombia and rural Paraguay . This program not only brings specialized care to remote areas but also creates replicable programs for accessible and equitable healthcare worldwide.
